CU X-pressions Dance Club to host Top Model Competitionby: Amanda Herrera - Collegian Staff
Merita Tyrell loves to dance, and so do the other 13 members of the CU X-Pression
Dance Club.
Tyrell is the current director of the organization that is open to any Cameron
students who share her passion for dance. The CU X-Pression Dance Club was founded in 2003, and Tyrell became director
in 2005, after the organization had been inactive for one year. According to Tyrell, the organization is not specific to one type of dance. “The members specialize or prefer different styles of dance. So we share
with and teach each other.” Although the group may seem relatively small compared to other groups on campus,
the CU X-Pression Dance Club works frequently with the community. One
of the things the dance club does is work with local junior high students who
enjoy dancing. “We teach many different forms of dance. If there is a particular
dance someone wants to learn that we are not familiar with, we can bring in
a guest dancer to teach everyone,” Tyrell said. The group meets every other Monday on campus not only to dance but also to
plan events and fundraisers for charity. “We believe in giving back,” Tyrell said. The X-Pression members are currently working on hosting the Fall Splash: Top
Model Competition. The event will be held at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 14 in the CU Theatre.
Admission will be $5.00 per person, and all ticket proceeds will go the American
Cancer Society. There will be five guest judges outside of CU who will be observing the nine
contestants. The contestants will compete in seven categories, including one-piece
swimsuit, two-piece swimsuit, two casual wear categories, CU wear, sports wear
and eveningwear. The clothing the models will wear has been provided by Dillard’s department
store, and the CU gear is from the Cameron bookstore. CU X-Pression Dance Club is planning an evening of entertainment. The CU Theatre
will be transformed into a fashion runway and extra entertainment will be provided
by dancers from the club as well some guest dancers. “The junior high students will perform some dances we have been
working on with them,” Tyrell said. The group hosted several fundraisers throughout September, selling floral
arrangements, fruit baskets and jewelry to raise money to purchase trophies
for the winners of the Top Model Competition.
