Sometimes even the best students need a mental health break from their academic studies. Whether knee-deep in chemical equations or Spencer’s The Faerie Queen, students can find relief at Cameron Campus Ministries.

Once a month on Thursdays, CCM sponsors a Coffee House/Smoothie Bar to give students a place to socialize with other students in a relaxed atmosphere.

“We wanted to provide students with an opportunity to relax and not have to focus on school,” Allissun Allee, student intern for CCM, said. “Students can take a break and have some fun expressing themselves.”

The coffee house features an open mic session. “Students can read poetry, play music, make political statements, or say anything they want to say,” Allee said.

And for those who feel that open mic speaking is not amongst their forte, board games are also available.

CCM hosts its coffee house on the last Thursday of each month. The next session is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 26, at 8 p.m., in the CCM building. CCM is located across the street, south of Cameron village at the corner of 27th and D Ave.

Admission is free and open to all Cameron University students, faculty, and staff.

And to help students cure their Friday blues, CCM offers MEAT and a Movie night.

Allee said the movie night was designed to offer students a respite from their academic regimes.

“Students can take a break, fellowship with other students and get to know other people,” Allee said.

The evening begins with the students meeting at CCM.  They all go to a prearranged restaurant for dinner, paid for by the individual students who attend. Carpooling to and from the restaurant is available. From there, students return to CCM to watch a movie, eat popcorn and relax. The movie viewing and popcorn are free.

Movies shown are selected from a variety of genres, with a different movie shown each month.

At CCM’s last MEAT and a Movie, held on Sept. 29, attendees dined at the quaint Italian restaurant, Luigi’s, before reclining at CCM to watch the movie “Stick It,” starring Missy Peregrym, Vanessa Lengies, Jeff Bridges, Nikki Soo Hoo and Maddy Curley.

CCM hosts its MEAT and a Movie one Friday evening each month at 5:45 p.m. The scheduled dates for the remainder of the fall 2006 semester are Oct. 6, Nov. 10 and Dec. 1.

In addition to its monthly coffee house and movie treats, CCM also sponsors a free lunch every Thursday from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., additional opportunities to get involved in community service events, and a free pizza night every Tuesday at 8:30 p.m., followed by an ecumenical worship service at 9 p.m.
